About this course

Why it matters

Boards now expect the finance function to shape decisions, not only to record them. Yet many CFO offices still spend most of their capacity on the close, the budget and the audit, leaving little room for capital allocation, scenario work or the pricing and portfolio choices that move enterprise value.

The program builds the executive repertoire that fills that gap: reading the business through its statements and value drivers, allocating capital with discipline, planning dynamically, governing risk and modernizing how finance operates.

How it runs for your organization

The format is 31 hours of self-paced online study on the Blue Ocean learning platform, on web and mobile, so finance directors, controllers and treasury heads progress without leaving their desks for days.

Group HR or the CFO's office enrolls the cohort under a corporate license and follows progress and completion on the administrator dashboard. Participants carry the frameworks from each module straight into the next planning cycle, board pack or investment review, and successful completion earns a digital, verifiable MBE credential.

What you will learn

Who this course is for

Companies building a succession bench beneath the CFO get the most from this program. Sitting Chief Financial Officers use it to reset their mandate around the strategist and catalyst roles. Finance Directors and Controllers who are candidates for the top finance job gain the capital allocation, valuation and board communication grounding the role demands.

Heads of FP&A move from producing forecasts to designing scenarios and decision triggers, Treasury Managers connect liquidity to strategy, and Risk and Governance Professionals see where controls and compliance fit in the wider value agenda. Most companies run it as a single-function cohort, sometimes adding a business unit leader so finance hears how its partners think.

Course outline

The 16 modules move from financial fluency through enterprise leadership to a capstone. Module one reads the statements as a system, and modules two and three set the CFO mandate and its link to enterprise value. Modules four through six cover planning, profitability and investment appraisal. Modules seven to nine address treasury, risk and governance, and IFRS reporting.

Modules ten to twelve cover modernization: finance transformation, analytics and AI, and the ERP and EPM technology stack. Modules thirteen to fifteen turn to business partnering and board influence, leading finance teams, and ESG stewardship, before module sixteen closes with case studies and the first 100 days as a new CFO.

Frequently asked questions

How does the program treat capital allocation and investment decisions?

Capital allocation runs through two modules. Module three sets out the frameworks and trade-offs behind enterprise value, including portfolio thinking and resource reallocation. Module six then supplies the quantitative toolkit: time value of money, discounted cash flow, WACC, NPV, IRR and payback, and the valuation methods and multiples used to judge an investment or an entire business.

Will participants learn to move beyond the annual budget?

Yes. Module four traces the shift from static budgets to agile planning and compares budgets, rolling forecasts and scenario planning as core approaches. Participants work with scenario management frameworks, identify the key variables that drive each scenario and set decision triggers and contingency plans in advance, so the finance function reacts to a signal rather than to a surprise.

Is treasury and liquidity management covered in enough depth for a treasurer?

Module seven is devoted to it. It separates cash flow from profit, positions treasury as a strategic function, works through liquidity planning and the working capital levers, and covers funding flexibility and stress testing for financial resilience. Treasury managers gain the enterprise context around their discipline, and other finance leaders gain enough treasury literacy to govern it.

Which reporting standards does the program address?

Module nine looks at financial reporting from the perspective of its purpose and users, then compares IFRS and US GAAP principles and the direction of convergence. It also covers the statutory audit and how a CFO should manage the relationship with auditors, and closes with integrated reporting and non-financial disclosure, which boards increasingly expect finance to lead. Module fifteen adds sustainability reporting under ISSB, CSRD and TCFD.

What does finance transformation cover beyond new systems?

Module ten explains why transformation matters, how finance operating models have evolved, and the main levers available: automation, ERP, shared services and a faster closing cycle. Module eleven extends that into analytics and AI for FP&A, forecasting and anomaly detection, and module twelve maps the technology stack itself: cloud ERP, enterprise performance management platforms and intelligent automation.

How do we enroll a finance team and track their progress?

Your organization takes a corporate license, enrolls the cohort on the Blue Ocean learning platform and follows enrollment, progress and completion for each person on the administrator dashboard. The 31 hours of content are self-paced on web and mobile, so a close week or a board cycle simply pauses study rather than disrupting it, and each participant who completes earns a digital, verifiable MBE credential.

How do individual learners register for this course?

Use the Register Now button on this page. It opens Chief Financial Officer Excellence on the Blue Ocean Academy website, where individual learners can enroll directly.

How does a corporate license for this course work?

Your organization licenses seats for a cohort or a whole team. Participants study the self-paced modules on the Blue Ocean learning platform, on web or mobile, and your administrator follows enrollment, progress and completion on a dashboard.

Can we start with a pilot cohort before a wider rollout?

Yes. A pilot cohort in one department is a practical first step. Use the corporate license form, and a program advisor will map the relevant courses and license options to your teams.

Ready to get started?

Request a corporate license to develop your finance bench with Chief Financial Officer Excellence, or ask about a pilot cohort for FP&A and treasury first.
