About the RTI Certification

Every budget cycle, learning leaders are asked what last year's training delivered, and many answer with attendance figures and satisfaction scores. Finance wants evidence that behavior changed on the job, that business measures moved, and that the movement can be attributed to the program.

Mastering Return of Training Investment gives L&D and HR teams the full evaluation chain to produce that answer, from measurement plans agreed before launch, through reaction, learning and application data, to isolating the training effect, converting it to value and calculating the return.

What You Will Learn

  • Choose among Brinkerhoff, Kaufman, CIPP, Anderson, Kraiger and LTEM approaches for a given program
  • Write a measurement plan with success criteria, stakeholders, KPIs and baselines before launch
  • Design reaction measures and pre-test and post-test assessments that show learning gain
  • Measure workplace application and plan follow-up and reinforcement to improve transfer
  • Connect behavior change to business impact through leading indicators and logic chains
  • Isolate the training effect, monetize benefits and calculate ROI, benefit-cost ratio and payback
  • Forecast ROI before launch and build a persuasive business case for the program
  • Report results with data storytelling tailored to executives and full impact studies

Who Is This Course For?

The cohort is whoever has to defend the learning budget. Learning and development managers and training managers are the core, since they commission programs and face the questions afterward. HR business partners should join because they carry the results into business unit reviews and need to read them critically.

Organizational development specialists use the same methods on leadership and culture initiatives, often the hardest to attribute. HR generalists responsible for compliance or onboarding training gain a way to show those programs matter beyond completion rates. Finance partners who sit with L&D belong too: when the person who will challenge the number has learned the method, the conversation gets shorter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the program insist on planning measurement before launch?

Because evidence gathered after the fact is weak. Module four shows how to define success criteria that align with a business objective, identify the stakeholders and decision makers who will judge the result, select KPIs and establish baseline data while there is still time to collect it. A program measured this way can show a change against a baseline; one measured afterward can only describe its end state.

How do participants prove training caused the improvement?

Module nine is devoted to isolation and monetization, which it treats as the step that makes an ROI figure credible. Participants learn the main methods for isolating the training effect from other influences on a business measure, how to reduce bias and strengthen credibility in those estimates, and how to convert improvement data into monetary value. Without this step a return figure is an assertion; with it, the figure survives scrutiny.

Does it go beyond the usual four-level model?

Yes. Module three covers evaluation frameworks beyond the familiar ones: the Brinkerhoff Success Case Method, Kaufman's five levels including societal value, the CIPP and Anderson value-of-learning models, and Kraiger's multidimensional approach alongside LTEM. Participants learn when each fits, so that a compliance program, a leadership journey and a sales skills course are not all forced through the same evaluation template.

Can the team forecast a return before a program is approved?

Module eleven covers pre-program ROI forecasting: why it is worth doing, how to forecast from reaction and learning data, expectancy and pilot-based estimates, and how to build a persuasive business case from them. Module twelve then handles the other end, reporting results credibly, tailoring the message to each audience, data storytelling and visualization, and the difference between an executive summary and a full impact study.

How does an L&D team fit 30 hours around program delivery?

The content is self-paced on the Blue Ocean learning platform, accessible on web and mobile, so each person studies between their own delivery commitments and nothing is scheduled. A sensible approach is to pair the modules with a live evaluation the team is already running. The administrator dashboard reports enrollment, progress and completion, so the head of L&D can see who has reached the isolation and calculation modules.

What does the team hold at the end of the program?

Each participant who completes the sixteen modules and the practice assessments receives a digital, verifiable MBE credential for Mastering Return of Training Investment from Blue Ocean Corporation, within the Mastering Business Excellence series. It is pitched at Professional level, for people who already run or commission training. The organization keeps the completion record on the dashboard and, in practice, gains a team that can present evaluation results to leadership with method behind them.
