About the SFM Certification

The month-end pack is accurate and on time, and the business makes its capital decisions without finance in the room. That gap is the problem strategic financial management addresses.

It asks finance managers to move from scorekeeper to value creator: translating strategy into financial plans, identifying the handful of drivers that move value, diagnosing performance with ratios and return on invested capital, appraising investments on NPV and IRR, finding the right mix of debt and equity, and understanding how enterprise value is measured and defended in a transaction.

What You Will Learn

  • Describe the four mandates of modern finance and the shift from scorekeeper to value creator
  • Translate a business strategy into financial objectives, value drivers, targets and budgets
  • Map a business model's unit economics to volume, price, efficiency and capital drivers
  • Diagnose performance with ratio analysis, the DuPont framework and return on invested capital
  • Appraise and rank investment projects using NPV, IRR, payback and explicit trade-offs
  • Set a debt and equity mix using WACC, leverage and financial flexibility
  • Manage the cash conversion cycle, liquidity buffers and short-term financing
  • Value an enterprise by DCF and multiples and assess M&A, divestiture and restructuring options

Who Is This Course For?

This suits a CFO who wants to develop the layer below: finance managers and financial controllers who are technically strong and need the strategic frame to step up. FP&A professionals apply the alignment, value driver and diagnostics modules to the plans and commentary they already produce.

Business finance partners gain the investment appraisal and capital structure logic that lets them advise on growth decisions rather than only report on them. Aspiring CFOs get a structured view of the whole mandate, from capital allocation to transactions. Because the modules move from strategy to valuation, a cohort that spans these roles builds a shared language for the finance leadership team.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from a financial analysis or FP&A program?

Analysis and planning occupy two modules here, not the whole program. The weight falls on decisions: whether to invest, how to fund it, what mix of debt and equity to carry, how much liquidity to hold and what the enterprise is worth as a result. Participants leave with a decision framework for capital, not a better model of last quarter.

What will finance managers do differently when evaluating a growth investment?

Module six gives them an investment decision framework with explicit criteria, distinguishes strategic, financial and dual-impact investments, applies NPV, IRR and payback, and ends with assessing trade-offs and prioritizing competing projects. Combined with module seven on WACC and capital allocation discipline, a manager can show not only whether a project clears the hurdle but whether it is the best use of the capital available.

Does the valuation content go beyond the theory?

Module nine explains what enterprise value is and why it matters, then works through discounted cash flow valuation and multiples with comparable company analysis before showing how valuation operates inside an M&A deal. Module ten extends it to the strategic rationale for transactions, deal structuring and premiums, due diligence and integration risk, and divestitures, spin-offs and restructuring. Participants finish able to read and challenge a valuation prepared by an advisor.

How does the program connect strategy to the numbers finance produces?

Modules three and four are the bridge. Module three explains why alignment matters, how finance enables strategy, and how to translate business strategy into financial plans by clarifying objectives, identifying value drivers and quantifying targets, budgets and forecasts. Module four goes into the business model itself: revenue streams, unit economics, the four value drivers, and the profit pools where competitive advantage sits.

Is working capital really a strategic topic for this audience?

Module eight treats it as one, because liquidity decisions shape how much growth a company can fund internally. It covers the cash conversion cycle, the management of receivables, payables and inventory, liquidity and solvency measures with funding buffers, and treasury with short-term financing. For a finance manager stepping toward a CFO role it closes the loop between the operating decisions in the business and the capital structure chosen in module seven.

What does the CFO office see while the cohort is in progress?

The administrator dashboard lists each enrolled participant with progress through the 16 modules and completion status, so the sponsor can see who is on track without asking. The content is self-paced on the Blue Ocean learning platform, on web and mobile, which matters for a cohort of controllers with hard reporting deadlines. On completion each participant holds a digital, verifiable MBE credential for Mastering Strategic Financial Management from Blue Ocean Corporation.
